Stephen Eckert
Senior Architect
Thoughtful. Creative. World traveler.
AIA
Stephen Eckert is a registered architect with more than 20 years of experience in residential design and construction. Before joining Caddis, Stephen was principal at Eckalizzi Design and an adjunct instructor at the University of Colorado Boulder, School of Environmental Design.
Stephen spearheaded a course in design/build for five summers at the Lama Foundation in Taos, New Mexico, where he facilitated the design and construction of four unique cabins/tiny homes and one shower facility.
In private practice, he worked on projects ranging from single-family homes to multi-family projects. A passion for affordable housing led Stephen to serve five years as a board member for Boulder Housing Partners, the local housing authority.
A strong presence in the Caddis office and a good relationship-builder with clients, Stephen brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm. As a senior architect, he effectively gets things done, seamlessly works with clients, and leads projects very effectively. Stephen asks the hard questions. When a potential solution seems obvious to others on the team, Stephen will say, “Is that true? Should we do something different?” This often leads to a new discovery for the team.
Stephen understands the broader social, cultural, and historical context of everything that Caddis does. His background in education and teaching serves Caddis well, and his curiosity is infectious. Younger people on the staff learn from his experience, and the more seasoned architects on our team are encouraged to be lifelong learners.
A lifelong communitarian interested in all of the different variations of living and working in community, Stephen has a strong background in cohousing. He was a founding member of Wild Sage Cohousing, played a role in the formation of other communities, and taught at Yestermorrow Design/Build School in Vermont. Stephen is also fascinated with the peripheries of the architecture profession, where it interfaces with other design elements and starts to do non-mainstream, quirky things.
Stephen serves on the Design Advisory Board for the City of Boulder, and he was a past board member of Boulder Housing Partners.
Stephen recently completed a gap year traveling around the world with his family. He is eager to put what he learned to practice in Caddis’s projects. Stephen believes in the power of good design, community, and sustainability to transform our world.
