- Location: Boulder, Colorado
Resource Central is an award-winning, innovative nonprofit in Boulder, Colorado, dedicated to saving water, reducing waste, and conserving energy. Its goal is “to make conservation so simple that you don’t even realize you’re doing it.”
Caddis was tasked with designing a large canopy to cover Resource’s outdoor architectural salvage yard to protect their treasure trove of lumber, cabinetry, old doors, windows, and more, and to completely remodel their existing facility. The new 18,500-square-foot steel canopy not only provides protection from the weather but is also designed for natural light to filter toward the middle of the structure, thus reducing the dependency on electrical light sources and enhancing the shopping experience. In addition, the canopy provides a support system for an enormous PV system, integrating daylighting and renewable energy production into a beautiful structure.
A new stand-alone canopy over the donation lane also provides protection for the first stage of receiving donated material before organizing it under the new larger canopy for selling it.
The existing metal-framed warehouse was thermally improved with new insulated metal siding, insulated overhead doors, new skylights, new public toilets, and energy-efficient heating and evaporative cooling systems.
In addition to our work on this remodel for Resource Central, we have also done work for related enterprises on site, including Resource Central and Eco-Cycle Center for Hard-to-Recycle Materials (CHaRM). We look forward to supporting these endeavors in the future in Boulder and in other municipalities.
