Naropa University, the first Buddhist-inspired university in the United States, is a cherished local institution in Boulder. With a storied past and a vibrant current-day existence, Naropa is part of what makes Boulder special.
Caddis Collaborative has been assisting Naropa with its facilities needs for many years, completing dozens of projects during this time. One location we’ve worked on extensively is the Nalanda Campus. This included conceptual master planning and handling of the city approvals for a rezoning process. The campus is located at the edge of town but on a main mass transit artery, with future growth planned. The goal was to find and create a sense of place that embodied the spirit of Naropa.
The initial tenant improvement manipulated an existing tilt-up and double-T concrete building to bring in light and create spaces for Naropa’s performing and visual arts programs, as well as the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics and the Clinical Mental Health Counseling programs. New elements included art studios; common spaces; recording, performance, and practice spaces; high-tech sound studios; smart classrooms; movable partitions in the classrooms; and upgraded dance and performance spaces.
