- Project Type: Single-Family Home
- Location: Boulder, Colorado
This project gave us the rare opportunity to design an addition to an existing condominium, located in an existing new urbanist neighborhood. It was also the first time the City of Boulder had approved a condo addition. Typically, when multifamily projects are built, they don’t change. Complicating things even further was that the unit was on the second floor, so we had to take special care with the design, both interior and exterior.
Our interior design features a natural concrete slab, beautiful and natural finishes, warm materials, indirect lighting, new windows, American Clay plaster, and reclaimed barnwood.
Our exterior design popped out a shiny metal-clad box to increase square footage, and changes to the balcony created an outdoor, private space that feels generous and open, despite the small square footage.
With only a slight modification in square footage (from 750 square feet originally to 845 feet with the addition), we were able to transform this condo so that an important spot in the neighborhood became a focal point from an urban design perspective.
