Spanish Hills Residence

  • Project Type: Single-Family
  • Location: Boulder County, Colorado

The 4,000-square-foot Spanish Hills Residence is a Marshall Fire rebuild The goal was to create an age-in-place home with a separate suite where the owners could host visiting relatives. The house presented two particular design challenges: it’s nestled into the slope of a hill, and it needed to be extremely fire-resistant.

With grand views of the Foothills and the Flatirons, the house includes a vaulted ceiling in the living area, daylighting sweeping into that space, beautiful wood beam framing throughout the space, and a bifold door to the exterior deck space. The energy-efficient house meets the requirements of the Department of Energy’s ENERGY STAR NextGen program as part of a utility rebate program..

We designed the home with a pavilion that cantilevers off the slope. Underneath the pavilion and around the house, the landscaping was intentionally designed with river rocks, gravel, and plantings in order to provide a buffer and break from any future fire danger. More native and xeriscape plantings fill in the native hillside grasses farther away from the home.
