Things we like and the things we like about them.

We are curious and passionate about what works. We love exploring architecture, urban design, and lively community. Join us here to learn more about what we do and why we do it.

Welcome 1 of 6: A Guide to Orienting New Members to Cohousing

Caddis Collaborative is delighted to share “Welcome to the Community,” a six-part series about how to attract and orient new members to cohousing communities. The series is written by Karin Hoskin, business manager at Caddis, former executive director of the Cohousing Association of the United States, and founding member of Wild Sage Cohousing.

What We’re Reading: Bob Recommends “How to Change Your Mind”

We asked Caddis Collaborative staff members what they’re reading. Senior architect Bob Wilson is at a rich time in his life, a time that calls for introspection and invites transformation. His exploration of growth and change ultimately led him to the ideas expressed in Michael Pollan’s bestselling book “How to Change Your Mind: What the New Science of Psychedelics Teaches Us About Consciousness, Dying, Addiction, Depression, and Transcendence.”

Co-Buying Real Estate: An Alternate Approach to Affordable Housing

Caddis Collaborative recently talked with Sarah Wells, broker associate and partner at Live Work Denver, about the firm’s efforts to advocate for co-buying models in Colorado. Sarah is a founder of Queen City Cooperative, and we are excited about her work to address financial barriers to home ownership and to find ways to build community and connection through housing.

Mission-Driven Communities in Israel: A Model for the United States?

We’ve been exploring the different types of communities and situations that can benefit from cohousing principles. One great example is Berkeley Moshav, the first large-scale Jewish cohousing community in the United States. In this post, Roger Studley, the founder of Urban Moshav and the community development manager for Berkeley Moshav, reflects on his journey to explore intentional communities in Israel and to bring the concepts back to the United States.

A Very Merry Fly Through at CoHousing Houston

We created a fly through for CoHousing Houston, a new community we’re designing in the East End of Houston, Texas. Apparently, one of the younger members of the forming community was especially inspired by that fly through. This 11-year-old member created his own fly through of the community at Christmas.

Designing with Nature: Biodiverse Design in Caddis Projects

How do you make a green environment for people to live in that is also integrated with nature? That’s the question we ask at Caddis as we incorporate the principles of biodiversity in our design. Throughout our work, we affirm the belief that the human world and the natural world can and should be integrated – rather than designing so that housing is over here and nature over there.

Four Strategies for Biodiverse Design

Biodiversity. It’s a term you may have heard gaining more popularity in environmental and design circles, but what does it mean for urban design and architecture?
