Caddis Spotlight: Rocky Mountain Ecodharma Retreat Center

By Published On: December 14th, 2021

Rocky Mountain Ecodharma Retreat Center (RMERC) is a rustic Buddhist retreat center located a 30-minute drive into the Foothills from Boulder, Colorado. The center brings Buddhism and Dharma back into the natural world where they originated and fosters “Ecodharma,” the clarity and compassion needed to better address the ecological crisis and inextricably related social justice issues.

RMERC is a low-cost home for spiritual practice, with an emphasis on practice in nature. A place for learning from nature, teachers, and other participants, the center provides a supportive place for deep practice, meditation, retreats, and workshops. RMERC is especially proud to offer workshops and retreats for activists as well as retreats for underserved communities, including people of color, veterans, youth, and other groups that bear the brunt of ecological and socioeconomic devastation.

Retreats blend ecological activism and contemplate practice. Ecodharma practices help participants develop clarity, compassion, and courage, all of which are needed to face humanity’s greatest challenge ever: climate change.

Situated at an elevation of 8,500 feet and located on 180 acres of gorgeous private river, meadow, and woodland adjacent to national forest land and just a few miles from the Indian Peaks Wilderness, RMERC has a lodge that provides comfortable year-round housing for up to 30 people.

Hazel Schmoll, a Colorado state botanist who educated the public about Rocky Mountain ecology, donated the old homestead that eventually became the Rocky Mountain Ecodharma Retreat Center.

Caddis Collaborative helped preserve and codify the historic use of this land as an educational retreat center through Boulder County entitlement processes and provided design services for bringing the facilities into year-round use, adding renewables, and ensuring historic preservation.

Caddis was pleased to work with the following companies on this project: Lopez Smolens Associates, LTD (structural engineering), TEEG, Inc. (mechanical engineering), AE Design (electrical engineering), and Blue Spruce Construction Services (builder).
